Rotork IQ3 Actuator Commissioning: Using Built In Diagnostics to Identify Wiring and Signal Issues

High Speed Actuator Commissioning

Commissioning high speed actuators requires accurate wiring, reliable control signals, and proper actuator setup. The Rotork IQ3 includes built in status features that can help technicians diagnose wiring and signal issues directly at the actuator.

Power Controls recently assisted an upstream customer with commissioning Rotork IQ3 actuators and Valvcon control valves.

The Challenge

The application required actuators to operate correctly and be properly configured for the customer’s valve system. During commissioning, Power Controls identified incorrect wiring terminations on the Rotork IQ3 actuators.

The customer also needed the incoming control signals to be verified and the actuators configured for the application.

How Power Controls Helped

Power Controls used the Rotork IQ3’s built in on screen status features to diagnose and correct the wiring issues.

The same status features allowed the team to verify the customer’s incoming control signals directly through the actuator, without using external meters or test equipment.

Power Controls also enabled the actuators’ manual setup mode. This feature allows users to configure the actuator locally using the control knobs and screen at the actuator.

The specific actuators were also equipped with an internal lithium ion battery for the customer’s requested failsafe application.

Technical Insight

The diagnostic and setup features built into the Rotork IQ3 can provide useful information during commissioning. In this application, Power Controls was able to use the actuator’s own status information to identify incorrect wiring terminations and verify incoming control signals.

The manual setup mode also provides a way to configure the actuator locally using the controls at the unit.
